As you might have guessed, I haven’t done much traveling over the past three months. With all the shutdowns due to Covid-19, there haven’t been a lot of places open that I can visit.
But, I have been getting out and doing a little traveling close to home. Biking and walking are some safe outside activities, so I’ve been getting out with my wife and exploring rail-trails that are nearby.
Favorite Rail Trails
I made a couple of videos of rail-trails that I visit frequently. One is paved and great for biking. The other is gravel and better suited for walking. Below are the videos – the first is on the Norowttuck Trail in Northampton, MA and the second is on the Mass Central Rail Trail in Oakham, MA
One Camping Trip So Far
The state parks in Massachusetts opened for camping on July 1st and I was quick enough to reserve a few days at Scusset Beach State Reservation near Cape Cod. My RV has sat in the driveway for three months and it felt great to finally take a trip even if it was just a few hours away
This is a great place for biking and beaching. The Cape Cod Canal is a few steps away from the campground and has a 7 mile paved bike path on each side. My wife and I spent 4 days biking and going to the beach. The weather was great and it felt good to be doing some usual summer-time activities.
The State Park campground was restricted to half capacity to reduce the occupancy (and the Covid-19 risk) but the beach was pretty full with day visitors. I read that state parks have been very busy since they are a way for people to get outside. The beach was busy on the days we visited and social distancing was a little bit of a challenge.
I made a video of our stay which you can see below.
So that’s the latest update on my travel activities. I have been cautious because of the Covid-19 risk. Fortunately, the Covid-19 numbers in Massachusetts have declined quite a bit from the April May timeframe. But, I’m staying close to home and avoiding any long-distance road trips for now.
I have another short trip to the Berkshires planned for next week and hope to make it to Maine in August.

Aww, thank for sharing Jim. It’s great to see folks enjoying the gorgeous beach and the beautiful weather! I am sure it’s a great healing for so many. Enjoy your trips and I look forward to seeing the next trip. Jean and I have been to Tanglewoods a few times. The area is beautiful and we hope to make it out to the Berkishires before the Fall. Thank you, for sharing. Great job!
We recently purchased a ‘14 24V. Quite a bit of technology and learning curve. We will eventually get there. Do you use a surge protector and if so what is the brand and model? Thank you.
You have made some comments in the past about gas powered rigs as an alternative to the Mercedes diesel. Are you thinking of the Ford E350/450 based units or something else?
Seems like your thoughts were shaped by experiences with the diesel engine systen, the need for DEF and the relative scarcity of Mercedes dealers.
Thanks again for your blog!
