Sorry for the delayed response to your question. No, I've never made it to Grant's Farm. I would like to visit St. Louis and take the tour of the Anheuser-Busch factory tour. But, I've heard and read that its not a RV friendly city.

J.Dawg, Have you visited Grant's Farm in St. Louis? If not, next time you're heading out west you might want to stop and visit the farm once owned by the family of Grant's wife. Grant lived there for a few years. Grant's Farm is an interesting place as is St. Louis in general. My daughter went to graduate school in St. Louis and I fell in love with the city while she was there. I have not heard many people talk about visiting St. Louis or who hold the city in high esteem. It is a wonderful old city, filled with gorgeous homes and a nice assortment of fun places to see which connect to a huge sweep of US history. I think you'd enjoy a week there!

I read Grant's memoir a few years ago found it was a good read. I had the same feeling about the 20 cigars. I can handle 1 about every 6 months.

Nice write up with a lot of good information. I've been reading books about Presidents in the 1800's but have not gotten to Grant yet. That should get me through the Midwest winter this year. I cannot imagine smoking 20 cigars per day.

In reply to <a href="https://jdawgjourneys.com/2018/10/ulysses-grants-galena/#comment-2470">Phil Troyer</a>.

It debatable. Grant did drink. Supposedly, he was the the type of drinker who got drunk on one drink. Shortly before he resigned in 1854, he was written up for being drunk on duty and threatened with a court martial. Once he was reinstated by Lincoln, his commanders knew he drank and counseled Lincoln against promoting him. Some used the old drinking report as an excuse. But there are no confirmed reports of him being drunk during the civil war. He never drank at home or around his wife.
