One of my favorite snowbird activities is spending time on the beach. I’m staying about a mile from Fort Myers Beach and getting over to the beach is an easy 10 minute bike ride. I’m not much of a sun worshipper or water dog. But, I do like to sit, ride, or stroll on the beach or just hang out at a beach front bar. The beach is usually loaded with people, so people watching is my main activity.
Everyday is different and I usually see something unique each time. I always carry a camera when I go and try to capture those unique moments. Some are memorable so I want to share / record some of them in this blog post.
Santa is a Babe Magnet
A couple of days before Christmas, I saw a guy dressed up in a Santa suit strolling down the beach. His gig was posing for pictures with people. Tip him a buck and you could take a picture with Santa on the beach. He worked the busy sections of the beach for a few hours each day. It was amusing to watch women flock to him like seagulls after bait fish. The guy constantly had bikini clad babes at his side posing for pictures. This Santa was a babe magnet! If you’re a portly geezer and want to meet women at the beach over the holidays, try wearing a Santa suit.
Wash Your Sins Away at the Beach
This was a first for me. I was sitting at a beach bar and noticed a group down near the water’s edge. I used my zoom lens and saw that some one was getting baptized. Ok. I’ve seen weddings on the beach but never a baptism. This required some closer inspection. Turned out a group was advocating salvation through Jesus and offering to wash your sins away right there on the beach. Not a bad idea. Last nights (or last weeks) bad behavior or indiscretion could be washed away right there on the beach.
I saw a couple of people go for it and get dunked in the ocean. But as they got done washing away one guys sins, he took to the megaphone and started berating the behavior of some nearby beer guzzling beach goers. Put one loud mouth Jesus freak lunatic in the midst of some inebriated vacationing red necks and you’ve got a recipe for confrontation. As you can surmise, some arguments ensued. Nothing got physical but there was some shouting. One frustrated young women didn’t like being told that eternal hell-fire awaited her. So she came up to him, pulled down her Daisy Dukes, bent over, and mooned him. Salvation wasn’t selling well on the beach that day.
Babes at Sunset
I like taking sunset pictures. I like seeing what mother nature’s color display will be at the end of the day. Each one is unique. One Friday, I was down on the beach waiting for my pizza order. The sun was going down and I walked across the street to the beach to see what I could capture. I was trying to get some foreground, middle ground, background in my pictures. Just as I was lining up some shots, some girls ran down in front of me and sat down at the water edge to watch the sunset. I could not have planned this shot. They stayed there for a couple of minutes watching the sun set. As they got up, some of them apologized for jumping in my picture. No problem. It worked out to be a great picture.
And that’s just some of the unique beach scenes that I’ve seen so far. This type of stuff is out there every day. I happen to have an eye for it and believe there’s a story behind every picture. As I said at the start, I never know what I’m going to see, but it’s always something.
