Back in June of 2014, my son and I did a road trip thru Colorado and Utah. On that trip we made a brief stop over in Page, Arizona. There’s a lot to see and experience around Page. Lake Powell, Glen Canyon, Glen Canyon Dam, Horsehsoe Bend, and Antelope Canyon are just some of the major attractions. It’s a place I plan to return to.
I wrote a blog article about our stop over at Page – Page Arizona – Highly Recommended. While there, I took a tour of Upper Antelope Canyon. This narrow slot canyon is on Navajo Tribal Land and to visit it requires going with a Navajo guide/tour service. I was lucky to snag a last-minute spot in a noon time tour when the sun and lighting are the best.
It was a good sunny day but windy with lots of blowing sand. It was difficult to get good color and exposure in the canyon because of the tricky light. The blowing sand made many of the pictures dull . It was also crowded in the slot canyon. It was tough to pause and take a good shot without getting people in the frame. My pictures that I published in the blog were ok but not great.
I was recently reading another blogger’s write-up on the canyon and it made me think to go back and see what I could do with my pictures. So, I went back to Antelope Canyon (on my computer). Thanks to Photoshop, I was able to crop the pictures to remove the people, adjust the light, and sharpen them up. The gallery below is the result. Just click on a picture to see the larger image and cycle through the gallery.
Antelope Canyon is a very unique place to visit. It’s hugely popular which means it can be crowded. But, it’s a worthwhile place to see and marvel at what nature carved through sandstone rock.
Great post and pictures! Really enjoy following your travels!
Thanks, Todd
Evocative photos with such beautiful light! I particularly love the one with the shaft of light.
I paid extra to go on the “photographer’s tour,” then after driving all that way, I get in the canyon and go to shoot my first photo. “No Memory Card.” It was back in my laptop. A day that I will NEVER forget!
Suzanne,
It was the post in your blog that inspired me to go back and see what I could do to fix my picture. You made mention of the difficulties when shooting in auto mode. I had the same problem which made me think to go back and do some post processing. Thanks for commenting. Have enjoyed following your recent journeys in CO and UT.
