I’m about to undertake my biggest journey yet – a 6 week Rocky Mountain roadtrip out to Colorado, up thru and across Wyoming, into Montana, over to South Dakota, and down across Nebraska. I know others have gone further and longer, but for me this will be my first road trip out west and 6 weeks will be the longest.
One aspect of doing these journeys is to push myself to go further and longer to see and experience new things. Many many years ago, my first big road trip was a week long trip to Charleston, SC to experience real southern living. That led to trips to several trips to Savannah, GA, several to Florida, and the mid Atlantic states. Sure, I’ve taken the fly and drive week long vacations to some cool destinations out west, but the extended road trip is more of a journey than just a trip to a location.
My home and transport for this journey will my Roadtrek 190 motor home. It’s got all necessities like a bed, stove, sink, frig, sink, bathroom, furnace, AC, TV, and an on board generator. Its the perfect road trip vehicle. When I bought the motor home last year this was just the type of trip that I wanted to be able to undertake. I’m now about to again live out another dream.

I’ll be driving clockwise to take advantage of the warming weather as I travel north. I have a general itinerary that I can change, but not a rigid timetable or schedule. Some of the key stops along the way will be:

- – Truman Presidential Library in Independence, MO
- – Eisenhower Library and Museum in Abilene, KS
- – Rocky Mountain National Park
- – Grand Teton National Park
- – Yellowstone National Park
- – Buffalo Bill Museum and Cody Stampede Rodeo
- – Little Bighorn Battlefield National Monument
- – Devils Tower National Monument
- – Custer State Park
- – Mount Rushmore
- – Badlands National Park
- – Nebraska Sand Hills
These are just the highlights. I’ll get to see the beaten path as well as the unbeaten path, drive the scenic highways, have time to stay longer at a spot if I want, eat the local food, and experience the unexpected.
